Who's on your ballot? Meet Wesley Walker
Updated: Mar 25
In this series, we introduce you to the candidates running for election April 6 who share our democratic values. Please make your plan to VOTE in this election... by mail, early, in-person... it all counts.
Wesley Walker currently serves on the Zion District #6 School Board.
1) Why are you running for this office?
I'm running for office because as a parent of school-age children I believe it is very important for parents to be involved in their children's education and I don't think there are many better ways to be involved than being a board member. Even if I were not a board member I would still volunteer and be very active in the school district.
2) What do you believe is the most important issue facing the organization you’d be serving, and what should be considered when addressing it?
To me the most important issue is to continue to provide parents in the district the choice to have their children learning in person or virtual depending on their children's needs. It is paramount that the board as the leadership of the district respect the parents' ability to make choices for the safety of their own families needs. It is most important to recognize that each family's needs are different and that a blanket approach will not work for everyone.
3) Historically, voter turnout in local elections is very low. What would you say to community members to encourage them to get out to vote April 6?
I would encourage everyone to understand that no community is perfect and for anyone that cares about improving our schools and our community voting in local elections is the most important thing we can do. Getting involved and being a part of the decision-making process is something I wanted to do so that I would not be on the sidelines hoping that things get better. I want parents to understand that this is our community and our school district and we must work together in order to make things as great as we want them to be.
4) What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or watched recently and why?
I am really into politics so I hope it's not too boring but the most interesting thing I've read recently is a news article detailing the American Rescue Plan that will soon become law. There will be funds for small businesses, schools, minority farmers, health insurance for low income people and I really am excited because I believe the American Rescue Plan will help lift millions of people out of poverty and other terrible situations.
5) Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you?
I would like voters to mainly know that I am a parent and I am truly a man of the people. That is the mentality I have. Since being on the board I have felt and noticed a separation between the board and community as if we are not approachable or we are not one of the community. The opposite is true. I want everyone to know moving forward if I continue to be on the board I am just an email away and I will always do my best to answer questions and communicate with community members.
